Roberto Soldado opens up on difficult Tottenham Hotspur spell

Speaking to Spanish newspaper AS (h/t Football.london), former Spanish international Roberto Soldado has opened up on the difficulties he faced at Tottenham Hotspur.

The 35-year-old was brought in as a part of the summer spending spree that followed the mega-money sale of Gareth Bale to Real Madrid.

A prolific scorer for Valencia, much was expected of Soldado when he signed for Spurs. It is fair to say that he struggled to make an impact in the Premier League.

Soldado failed to settle in England both on and off the pitch. While he continued to struggle to score, the language and the change in scenery also affected him adversely.

“Perhaps mentally being away [from Spain], the language, affected me a lot.”

In the end, he spent just two seasons at White Hart Lane. Soldado made 76 appearances during this time, scoring just 16 goals. (h/t Transfermarkt)

Soldado does not look back at his time at Spurs with fondness. In fact, he admits that his spell in North London wasn’t the best and he did not fit in well in the city nor the club.

“My family did not quite fit in with London very well and they were two very hard years because I did not enjoy them.”

The Spaniard left Spurs in 2015 to join Villarreal. He never went on to achieve the same numbers he put up at Valencia. His record at Spurs may not have been the worst, but it was grossly underwhelming.

Of the seven players who were brought in the summer of 2013, only Christian Eriksen can be said to be a qualified success.

Although Erik Lamela is still at the club, he has failed to reach the levels he promised to hit during his initial years at the club.
