Manchester United academy starlet Joe Hugill turned down a transfer to Tottenham and Arsenal

A report by Daily Mail (h/t Metro) mentions that Joe Hugill turned down a transfer to Tottenham Hotspur before choosing to join Manchester United in the summer of 2020. He completed a transfer to the Red Devils from Sunderland for a £300,000 fee.

The United U-23 player is in superb form for his team. He recently scored 4 goals against Liverpool U-23 earlier in the month and already has 10 goals in 13 Premier League 2 games so far.

And he could have been doing all this at Spurs’ academy. But it was not to be, as he rejected advances from Tottenham for his transfer to Old Trafford.

Not just Spurs, but another Premier League club chased the 17-year-old. Tottenham’s North London rivals Arsenal also wanted the 6’2″ striker in their academy. (h/t Metro)

Not a big loss

Hugill is already touted to receive a call-up to the senior side by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as he raved about the youngster’s performance against Liverpool.

“If we go from that game, I’d pick Joe Hugill. Four goals by Hugill, he’s a top striker as well, we’re looking forward to seeing his development.”

Tottenham do not have an urgent need for strikers in their starting XI. Harry Kane and Son Heung-min are doing a terrific job, with Carlos Vinicius getting minutes every now and then.

Nevertheless, Hugill could have been a great understudy for Kane. But Tottenham are not without their own young talents and have two exciting strikers coming up from their academy.

18-year-old Troy Parrott, who is on loan to Ipswich Town, and 16-year-old Dane Scarlett have both impressed and could be a good long-term option upfront for the club.
